February 26th is National Spay Day
February 24th, 2008 11:23 AM

Spay Day USA takes place each year on the last Tuesday of February. In 1995, Spay Day USA became a program of The Humane Society.

Spay Day USA is America's first and only national day of action to promote an effective and humane means of decreasing the euthanasia of homeless animals in shelters.

During Spay Day USA's first 13 years, participants spayed or neutered an estimated 1,387,000 animals! When you consider that an unspayed cat can give birth to 18 kittens each year and an unspayed dog can give birth to 20 puppies each year, and that the average cost for shelters to handle each homeless animal is $176, it's clear that Spay Day USA participants have, potentially, prevented millions of surplus births and saved millions of taxpayers' dollars.

Happy Sadie Hawkins Day!
February 29th, 2008 11:07 AM

February 29th is the extra day in Leap Year, but it's also known as Sadie Hawkins Day.

In the past women were hoping to marry their beaus had to wait for a proposal; they were not allowed to pop the question themselves... except on one day, every four years. You guessed it, on Feb 29!

Sadie Hawkins Day, developed out of the popular cartoon strip "Li' Abner" by Al Capp. A female character named 'Sadie Hawkins' who lived in the fictional town Dogpatch was having a tough time getting a man to propose to her. Her father, the mayor of said fictional town, declared one day, 'Sadie Hawkin's' day. The unmarried women in Dogpatch ran -- literally -- after unmarried men to propose that day."

So women, February 29th is you're day to ask that special someone.

REMINDER: Lanes on the 91 will be closed at Green River.
February 18th, 2008 7:04 AM

On Saturday, February 23rd between the hours of 11:30pm to 11:00am on Sunday the 24th, all lanes on the 91 freeway will be closed. This is to facilitate the demolition of the old Green River Road bridge.

Congestion on Green River Road bridge has exceeded lane capacity warranting needed improvements. There will be construction of a new bridge, the addition of two through traffic lanes, sidewalks and realignment of the on and off ramps.

There will be detours but we suggest looking for alternate routes.

Give Life at the Corona City Hall on February 28th
February 5th, 2008 3:17 PM

Help save a life by donating blood at the City blood drive on Thursday, February 28th from 9am - 2 pm at Corona City Hall.

Here are a few facts about blood donation.

  • Each day 400 pints of blood are needed to save lives in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties.
  • Giving blood will not decrease your strength.
  • You cannot get AIDS or any other infectious disease by donating blood.
  • After donating blood, you replace the fluid in hours and the red blood cells within four weeks. It takes eight weeks to restore the iron lost after donating.
  • The rarest blood type is the one not on the shelf when it’s needed by a patient.

For more information please call (951) 817-5824.

A call to dog owners in Corona
February 4th, 2008 5:43 PM

A petition has been started for a Dog park in South Corona. Dogs need a place to run and play and be leash free! South Corona has grown tremendously in the recent years; schools have gone up, streets are expanding and recreational parks are popping up everywhere...yet our four legged friends are being forgotten. Be sure to get your name on the petition today for this great addition to our community.

South Corona, CA Dog Park Petition

Here are a few comments from others:

Feb 2, 2008, Dennis Dieter , California
We have made the trip to the dog park on the other side of the city a few times, but it is too crowded in the evenings. That fact alone should be enough to warrant another park on the South end of the City. The same items avaiable at the current dog park should be supplied. I am not so sure a fountain within the fenced area should be provided. May lead to disputes between the dogs. Having a dog fountain outside of the gated area works well for leashed K9s.

On the South end of the City...Near Santiago HS would be an area that would service a large population of home owners.

Feb 1, 2008, Art Deco , Maine
Yes, please give California the dog parks it deserves with it's growing population, like South Corona. States and municipalities I traveled to are either struggling with this problem or getting involved with all four feet, such as Clearwater, FL. You need to be barking at the right people to make it happen.

Jan 29, 2008, Jarrod Walker , California
It would be great to have a dog park that is closer to actual neighborhoods, rather than in the middle of an industrial area, next to an airstrip. Perhaps that would increase the amount of people who bring their pets to enjoy an enclosed area where they're free to play off leash. I can't see it being too big of an inconvenience to fence off an area in one of the many parks that have been going up or already existed in corona to create an environment that I'm sure many would appreciate.

South corona would be great, but even a little closer to ontario would be a big improvement.
